Gates is an American businessman. He is the most
successful business man in
the world today. He is chairman of Microsoft. He
founded the software company
with his friend when he was only 19 years old. He worked very hard.
And his business was very successful. Today, he is the richest person in the
world. This week, let's meet Bill Gates and learn how to become a
successful person like him!
William Henry Gates III was born in Seattle on October 28, 1955. As
a child, he loved computers and math. Bill was the smartest kid in
his school. He learned many things fast and often got bored in school. So Bill's
parents decided to put him in a private school where he would
be challenged more. The Lakeside
private school had just bought a new computer when Bill arrived. Within a week, he
had surpassed the knowledge of the computer
teacher at the school. Soon, he was writing his own programs.
At the age of 14, Bill started a small company called Traf-O-Data
with his friend Paul Allen. They sold a program that could count traffic in a city. This company
wasn't a big success. But the two boys earned some money and good
business skills.
In 1973, Bill entered Harvard University. Bill was also bored there.
So he spent most of his time programming. He told his teachers that
he would be a millionaire by the time he
was 30 years old. Bill soon left Harvard for business opportunities
in programming. After dropping out of Harvard, Bill created the first
basic operating language for the
computer. When he was 31 years old, he was a billionaire.
 In 1975,
Bill Gates and Paul Allen co-founded Microsoft. Bill was only 19 years
old. The company created the MS-DOS operating system. It is still
used today. Now Microsoft has grown to be the largest software company
in the world. Microsoft controls 80~85% of the entire PC software industry.
The company has nearly 18,000 workers.
The Forbes magazine's list of the World's Billionaires has ranked Bill Gates as the
richest person in the world from 1995 to 2007. He is the richest man
alive. Also, he is one of
the most powerful men alive.
Bill Gates doesn't believe in luck but just
hard work. Bill thinks that if you don't work your hardest, you will
never succeed. He believes that if you are smart and know how to apply your wisdom, you can accomplish anything. |
