19-year-old
Matt Guthmiller recently completed his 29,000-mile (about 46,670
km) journey in a single-engine airplane. The boy from South Dakota
in the U.S. may have become the youngest person to fly solo across
the globe. The previous record was set by Jack Wiegand last year.
Jack was 21 years old when he completed his journey.
Matt began his 44-day journey in California, on May 31. He made
24 stops in 14 countries across five continents during the journey.
His stops included London in the United Kingdom, Rome in Italy,
Athens in Greece, and Cairo in Egypt. He kept in contact with his
parents every day during the journey.
Matt is
a student who is majoring in engineering at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology (MIT). His interest in flying dates back to his childhood.
He used to spend lots of hours playing a flight simulator game.
He also got his pilot¡¯s license at the age of 16. ¡°As a little kid,
he was afraid to go down to the basement,¡± said Allen Guthmiller,
his father. ¡°It is amazing how kids change. Now he is not afraid
of anything.¡±
¡°My real goal is to inspire other young people to attempt things
of a similar magnitude. That¡¯s what I hope to accomplish with this
flight,¡± said Matt. |
