history of Children¡¯s Day.
Children are the hope of the world. That¡¯s why adults protect and love children.
Many countries around the world celebrate Children¡¯s Day to remember the preciousness of children.
Interestingly, each country celebrates the day
on different dates.
Children¡¯s Day was first celebrated on April
23, 1920 in Turkey. Soon, UNICEF (United Nations
International Children¡¯s Emergency Fund)À¯¿£ ¾Æµ¿ ±â±Ý decided to recognize this important day as International
Children¡¯s Day±¹Á¦ ¾î¸°ÀÌ ³¯. International Children¡¯s Day is celebrated
every year all around the world.
All children are lovely and they need to be protected. But sadly, many children are
living in unsafe conditions. Some kids living
in poor countries even have to work long hours every day.
This is because their parents are poor. And they don¡¯t have money
to study. The UN (United Nations)±¹Á¦ ¿¬ÇÕ believe that every child has
the right to be safe and protected.
So, it
decided to protect children¡¯s rights and help them learn, too. In
1954, the UN General AssemblyÀ¯¿£ ÃÑȸ recommended that all countries
should establish a Universal Children¡¯s
Day¼¼°è ¾î¸°ÀÌ ³¯. From this time on, Universal
Children¡¯s Day began to be celebrated on November 20 every year. Today,
it is celebrated in more than 100 countries.
So, when did Korea start celebrating Children¡¯s Day? It was all started
by a man 86 years ago. This man loved children very much. His name
was Bang Jung-hwan. In the past, Korean children
weren¡¯t treated well. Mr. Bang thought this was wrong. He believed that children
are our future and they should be treated better. So, he decided to
celebrate Children¡¯s Day to let people know the preciousness of children.
Korea
first celebrated Children¡¯s Day on May 1, 1923 in Seoul. From 1927,
we started celebrating the day on the first Monday of May. But in
1937, Japan banned us from celebrating
the day. On May 5, 1946, the Korean Establishment Preparation Board°Ç±¹ÁغñÀ§¿øȸ
appointed the day as Children¡¯s
Day. The day became a public holiday in 1975. Since then, we celebrate
Children¡¯s Day on May 5 every year. Korea believes that children are
the future of our nation. Yes, you really are
our future and hope! Happy Children¡¯s Day, everyone! |
