November 8, a very special tiger was born in South Africa. A tiger
named Julie gave birth to five baby tigers
and became a mother. Among them, there is a very special tiger. Unlike his four normal-colored brothers and
sisters, he is white! Surprisingly, he is the only wild white tiger on Earth!
Actually, white tigers were believed to have gone extinct. So when
the baby white tiger was born, the whole world was very surprised
and excited! The white tiger was found by a tiger conservationist named
John Varty. He owns several parks for tigers
in Africa. “I was very surprised when I saw him,” said John.
“He is thought to be the only white tiger living in the wild on Earth.”
According to Mr. Varty, the
five baby tigers weigh about 800-1,000 grams
and they are all very healthy. When the tigers
are big enough to leave home, they
will be sent to one of John’s other parks nearby in South Africa. “I
hope one day, my tigers can be shipped to other countries
to boost decreasing numbers in their
natural environment,” said John.
Today, only about 1,000 tigers are left in the wild. They have been
hunted in many countries. The World Wide Fund for Nature세계자연보호기금 said
that the number of tigers has dropped sharply in the past nine years. |
