On April 28, The Kids Times had a chance to meet teachers belonging to the AESET (Association of Elementary School English Teachers) in Goyang city, Geyonggi-do. The AESET is popular in this area. The teachers are voluntarily participating in great English programs. The Kids Times interviewed one AESET member, Yoon Young-ah. She is a teacher in Ilsan Elementary School. Here is what she had to say about the teacher group¡¯s education program and her thoughts on English education in Korea.

The Kids Times: As a school English teacher, do you have anything to say to The Kids Times¡¯ readers?
Yoon: I want children to enjoy leaning English. Some children may think learning English is boring, but it is not true. Just try to think of your favorite things in English. It can help you feel closer to English.

The Kids Times: Can you tell us about the association¡¯s English program?
Yoon: We prepare various English textbooks that all of the students can read and enjoy together. By reading the books, we encourage them to express their feelings and thoughts in English. We also run homework-based classes. We always consider every student¡¯s type of learning style.

The Kids Times: What is the purpose of this association?
Yoon: Well, our ultimate goal is to teach students in English for a full hour. However, everyone¡¯s English abilities are different. We are now focusing on less fluent students, so some students may find the lessons are a bit easy for them. But we want to activate public English education and help the students who are not able to get private English lessons.

The Kids Times: Since everyone¡¯s English level is different, teaching must be hard, isn¡¯t it?
Yoon: Yes, every student has different English skills. Not everyone is good at English. So it is quite difficult to set focus on one level.

The Kids Times: Lastly, do you think there is anything to be improved in terms of elementary schools¡¯ English education system?
Yoon: I think most elementary schools need to establish their own basic curriculum. I also think all of the schools in the nation should be able to operate English Immersion programs freely according to their educational environment. This will help both teachers and students enjoy teaching and learning English.
