On December 2, the UN named Stevie Wonder as a ¡°UN Messenger of Peace.¡± He is a famous American singer. He is a very talented musician and he can play many instruments, too. Until now, he has won many Grammy Awards. What¡¯s surprising is that he is blind. He cannot see anything! But he still managed to achieve many great things. As a UN Peace Messenger, he will deliver the message of hope to many people, especially to the disabled.

The UN picks people to be Messengers of Peace every year among famous artists, musicians, sports stars, and writers. They work hard to give people in need hopeful messages through media. This year, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon chose Stevie Wonder to be its peace messenger.

¡°Stevie Wonder is a true inspiration to young people all over the world about what can be achieved despite any physical limitations,¡± said Mr. Ban. ¡°He has consistently used his voice and special relationship with the public to create a better world. He also tries hard to protect human rights and improve the lives of those less fortunate through his music. He is admired by millions of people all around the world.¡±

Stevie Wonder was born on May 13, 1950 in America. Sadly, he became blind shortly after birth. But his parents helped him learn how to live a happy life. By age 9, little Stevie learned to play the harmonica, piano and drums! He enjoyed singing, too. Music made the blind boy very happy.

Little Stevie was very good at singing. He became a professional singer at the age of 11. By age 13, he gained huge popularity in America. Many of his songs were also loved by music fans worldwide. ¡°I Just Called to Say I Love You¡± is probably his most famous song. The song is still very popular. Until now, he has sold more than 100 million records and won 25 Grammy Awards!

Currently, there are about 650 million disabled people (10 percent of the world¡¯s population) around the world. Many of them are living in poverty. Stevie Wonder promised to work hard for them.
