Look out the window. It¡¯s
so beautiful outside! The sky is blue
and the sun is shining brightly. Also, the trees
are covered with green leaves. The green leaves
are dancing in the summer breeze! It looks like they
are waving to say hello. Did you know that trees help us breathe clean air? They also help
us in many other ways. Just look around you. Your desk,
chair and even your pencils are made of trees! Yes, trees are everywhere around us. This
week, let¡¯s learn more about precious trees!
Trees help cool down the atmosphere. So if we plant many trees, we can
save air conditioning costs in the summer. One
tree produces up to 120 kilograms
of oxygen a year. That is more
than enough to supply oxygen to a family
of 4 people. Trees also help us breathe in clean air. They absorb the carbon that cars produce.
A tree can absorb one ton of carbon dioxide during its
lifetime! Trees also help reduce noise pollution.
The average tree in a city can
live only about 8 years. But trees can live for thousands of years.
So, how old is the world¡¯s oldest tree? The world¡¯s oldest living
tree is found in Sweden. Its root system has been growing for 9,550 years!
Then, what is the tallest tree in the world?
It is a California Redwood and grows in northern California¡¯s Redwood
National Park. It is more than 110 meters tall and over 2,000 years
old!
Trees are
very important in our lives. Papers, pencils, furniture and so many
other things are made of trees. An average-sized tree can provide enough wood to make
170,000 pencils. In America, an average person uses 340 kilograms
of paper every year. Also, 95 percent of American homes are built
using wood. This means each American uses a 30-meter-tall, 40-centimeter-wide
tree every year for their paper and wood product needs.
Trees are important for the environment, too. They provide homes for animals
such as birds, squirrels, and bugs. They also provide food
for humans and animals. Trees
make people feel good, too. Seeing trees relaxes us and reduces our
stress. Doctors say hospital patients who have
a view of trees heal faster! Aren¡¯t trees
really amazing? |
