do you think is the king of golf? Yes, his name is Tiger Woods! He
is one of the most famous golfers in the world. So,
what made him so special? Well, Tiger Woods
has won many of the most famous golfing tournaments in the world.
The golf king started learning the game of golf when he was 6 months
old! And he was only 8 years old when he scored his first hole-in-one! This week, let's
meet the amazing golfer, Tiger Woods.
Tiger Woods was born on December 30, 1975 in California, U.S. Tiger's
real first name is Eldrick. He was given the nickname "Tiger"
after a friend of his father, to whom his father had also given that
nickname.
Tiger began taking an interest in golf when he was just six months
old. He would watch his father hit golf balls into a net and would
try imitating his swings. At the age of 2, Tiger Woods appeared on TV, practicing
his swings. By the time he was 3, he had already shot a 48 on a nine-hole
course! When he was just 5, the golf world began to take notice of Tiger Woods.
He was even featured on the cover of a golf magazine.
In 1992, at the age of 16, Tiger Woods played in his first professional golf tournament.
Two years later, he went to college at Stanford University. During
his years in college, he appeared in only a handful of professional
tournaments.
 In 1996,
Tiger Woods turned pro, at the age of 20. And
he won two tournaments in his first season on the PGA (Professional
Golfers Association)미국프로골프협회 tour. In 1997, at the young age of just
21, Tiger Woods was ranked number 1 in the world! He was the youngest
golfer ever to have the number 1 Official World Golf Ranking세계골프랭킹.
Tiger was also selected as the "1997 PGA Player of the Year."
Since turning pro, Tiger Woods has won nearly 60 tournaments! He lost
his number 1 spot in the world golf rankings in 2004, and he was ranked
third in the world behind Ernie Els and V.J. Singh.
However, in 2005, his playoff victories at the
Masters and at the British Open have placed him on top of the golf
world's rankings once again. On October 5, 2004, the golf king got
married to Swedish model, Elin Nordegren.
Tiger Woods started the Tiger Woods Foundation in 1996 with his father
to help children. Through scholarships, junior golf
clinics, and the new Tiger Woods Learning Center, the Foundation is
helping millions of children reach their dreams! |
