Yeah! It's finally summer time! It's time to hit the beach! Most families go on vacation in summer to the beach or mountain to ward off the summer heat. There's nothing better than traveling with your family during the summer vacation. But there's a small problem. While riding in a car, train, airplane or boat, you sometimes feel sick! When this happens, you might also really feel tired, dizzy, or sick to your stomach. Sometimes you might even throw up. It's no fun when this happens! But don't worry. It's nothing serious. You just got motion sickness. But what is motion sickness? And how can you avoid it? To have a fun summer vacation, you should learn how to avoid motion sickness. I'll tell you how. Just follow me!

What Is Motion Sickness?
A few parts of your body affect the way you feel movement. For example, the liquid in your inner ears roll around, helping you sense if you're moving. What you see also lets your body know whether you're moving and in which direction. Your skin receptors tell your brain which parts of your body are touching the ground. Muscles and joint sensory receptors also tell your brain if you're moving your muscles and which position your body is in. Your brain gets an instant report from these different parts of your body and tries to put together a total picture about what you are doing just at that moment. But if any of the pieces of this picture don't match, you can get motion sickness.

Why Do I Get Motion Sickness?
You may get motion sickness if you are reading a book in a moving car. Why? This is because your inner ears and skin receptors will sense that you are moving forward, but your eyes are looking at a book that isn't moving. And your muscle receptors are telling your brain that you're sitting still. So your brain gets a little confused. When this happens, you might feel dizzy and tired. You might even feel like vomiting. But don't worry. There's a few ways you can avoid motion sickness!

How Can I Avoid Motion Sickness?
There are a few things you can do to avoid the unpleasant feelings of motion sickness. First, always sit facing forward. Don't face backward in your seat or sit in a seat that faces backward. Sitting forward helps keep the motion sensed by your eyes and ears the same.
Second, look outside and enjoy the great outdoors. From inside a car, look at stuff far away like the cottage up ahead or a mountain. When you get seasick on a boat, go to the deck and look far out into the horizon. On an airplane, try looking out the window.
Third, whatever you're riding in, find the place where you feel the least amount of movement. This means sitting closer to the center of a plane or in the middle of a boat.
Lastly, ask your parents to give you medicine before you travel.

Now, you know how to avoid motion sickness, right? So try one of these when you get motion sickness while you are traveling this summer. Just in case none of these works, don't forget to prepare a plastic bag! Have a fun, healthy summer, everyone!
