Everyone
hopes the New Year will be filled with happiness and good luck.
New Year¡¯s Day is the most important day in most countries. That is
why people celebrate the special day
with their family and friends. So, what do people eat to bring good luck in the New
Year when they gather together?
Many people in the world celebrate New Year¡¯s Day by eating special
food that brings good luck. For example, we eat rice cake soup in Korea.
The white color represents a new beginning
and purity. The round shape of
the rice cake symbolizes money and fortune. Koreans hope the
New Year will be flourishing by eating rice
cake soup.
Many other countries also believe that anything in the shape of a
ring brings good luck. A ring symbolizes ¡°coming full circle.¡± For
that reason, the Dutch believe that eating
donuts on New Year¡¯s Day will bring good fortune.
Many households in America celebrate New Year¡¯s Day
by eating black-eyed peas. They usually
eat the peas with ham or pork. Black-eyed peas have
been considered good luck in many other countries, too. Pork is considered
lucky because it symbolizes prosperity so people eat
it during this time as well.
Another interesting good luck food is cabbage. Many people all
around the world eat the lucky vegetable on New Year¡¯s Day. They believe
that cabbage leaves are a sign of prosperity, representing bills. On New Year¡¯s Day,
let¡¯s eat a variety of food so 2010
is a successful and rewarding year! |
