Boy, oh boy, let¡¯s crank up the air conditioner! The weather is just too hot these days. Whenever we are outside our body is sweating. It¡¯s because of the hot weather. You know that sweat has water, right? Well, I guess we are all losing water. Now, that doesn¡¯t sound too good. How about a cold glass of water?

Your body needs water to work properly. That¡¯s why if you sweat, you feel thirsty. The water must be replaced. If you don¡¯t replace the water, you will start to feel sick. How sick? You might even have to go to the hospital. When your body lacks water, it¡¯s called dehydration.

Kids can get dehydrated when they are playing hard and having fun outside. I bet you have gotten really sweaty and red-faced when you played sports. You can also get dehydrated when you are sick. If you have the stomach flu, you might throw up or have diarrhea. Another sign of dehydration is not peeing so much. Dark or strong smelling pee can be a sign of dehydration.

If you are going outside, it¡¯s a good idea to drink water before, during and after play. It¡¯s also smart to dress cool. This will make you lose less water. If you are sick, drink little sips of water and soups. This is important. Even if you are not thirsty or hungry, you must do this. Other foods like fruits and vegetables are good too. They contain lots of water.

Most dehydration can be cured with water. But sometimes, that isn¡¯t enough to get you feeling better. You may need to get to the doctor or emergency room.

The best thirst quencher is not Gatorade or pop drinks. The best drink is water. Milk and juice are great, but water is the drink of champions in this case. Drinks that contain a lot of sugar make you pee even more. And as you now know, that¡¯s the opposite of what you need to do when you are dehydrated! It¡¯s good for your body to drink 8 glasses of water. Let¡¯s stay cool and not dehydrated this summer.
