Anacondas are members of the boa family. Anacondas live mainly in wet tropical areas with marshes, lakes, or rivers. They are sometimes called water boas. Anacondas are only found in South America. They are among the largest and most powerful snakes in the world. The name "anaconda" is said to come from a Tamil word meaning "elephant killer."
There are 4 kinds of anacondas: the green anaconda, the yellow anaconda, the dark-spotted anaconda, and the Bolivian anaconda. The green anaconda is the largest snake in the world. It can weigh 250 kilograms and have a girth of more than 30 centimeters in diameter! Female anacondas grow bigger than males. They can reach amazing size, ranking as the heaviest of all snakes. Some anacondas can reach up to 9 meters in length!
Anacondas are most active at night. They spend much of their time in water, hunting for their food. They hunt reptiles, mammals, fish and birds. The biggest anacondas can swallow prey as large as crocodiles or deer. But they rarely attack humans.
The Anaconda can swallow prey much bigger than the size of its mouth. It swallows its prey whole, starting with the head.
Anacondas have teeth, but they are not poisonous snakes. They rely on their power to control their victims. Anacondas' teeth are not used for chewing. Their teeth are used for holding onto their preys, preventing them from escaping. Anacondas swim well and kill their prey by strangling them. If that does not work, they drown their preys. Anacondas can survive a long time without eating!
