On November 9, Germany celebrated its 20th anniversary of reunification. Germany was once divided into two territories by the Berlin Wall. In 1989, the communist East and the democratic West became one country when the Berlin Wall came down.

Last Monday, thousands of people gathered around the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin to celebrate 20 years of unity. Various events were held to remember the happy moment in history. ¡°After suffering for a long time, we could successfully unify the two Germanys two decades ago. Looking back, it was a miracle and it still remains a miracle,¡± said German President Horst Koehler.

Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, many people in Eastern Germany died when they tried to make their way across the border. ¡°Before the joy of freedom came, many people suffered,¡± recalled President Koehler.

American President Barack Obama sent a congratulatory message. In a video message screened at the main event, Obama said, ¡°Let us never forget November 9, 1989, nor the sacrifices that made it possible.¡±

When the border opened on November 9, 1989, people all over the world cheered with joy. ¡°It was one of the happiest moments of my life,¡± said one of the visitors named Dieter Mohnka, who was born in Eastern Germany. ¡°I had long been fascinated with West Germany. I went to school in East Germany. My teachers told us about the wonderfulness of the East, but I really wanted to go the West. My dream came true when the wall fell,¡± he said.

With the unification of Germany, Korea became the only divided nation in the world. Let¡¯s hope we can also become one country in the near future!
