Things You Didn't Know About Your Eyes    [10-08-2007]

I am sure you know that everyone's eyes are a little different. People have different eye colors and also have different eye sights. Do you know why some friends of yours wear very thick glasses? Yeah, that's easy. I bet you are saying, "It's because they have bad eye sight." Well, then, can you tell me the difference between near-sighted vision and far-sighted vision? Now, if you started scratching your head, pay close attention to this week's feature on eye sight and how corrective lenses can help people see better.

¡áDo you know how your eyes work?¡á
There are four important parts of your eyeball. Cornea is a clear tissue that helps the eye focus. Iris is the colored part of your eyeball. Pupil plays an important role of letting light into the eye. And lastly, retina is at the very back of the eyeball. Retina produces and delivers the image you see to your brain. If you have good vision, it means that all four parts of your eyeball are working very well. It means, your eyes are capturing the image and sending the image to your brain. If you have poor vision, it means your eyeball isn't properly capturing the image you see. It could be because light isn't coming into your eyeballs in the right angle. Or it could be because the eyeball isn't able to focus on an object sharply. When this is the case, glasses or contact lenses are needed to help light come into your eyes in the right way and allow your eyes to focus on an image.

¡áNear-sighted vs. Far-sighted¡á
Near-sightedness and far-sightedness are common problems in eye vision. But it's easy to get the two confused. Being near-sighted means you can see stuff that's near like a book, but has trouble seeing stuff that's far away. Being far-sighted means you can see stuff that's far away, but has trouble seeing up close like reading the print in a book. In both cases, the image is not properly focused on the retina, which is at the back of your eyeball. With near-sightedness, the image becomes focused in front of the retina. With far-sightedness, the image is focused behind the retina. In both cases, glasses and contact lenses can correct the problem.

¡áGoing for an eye exam¡á
It's a good idea to visit an eye optometrist every 6 months or so. This is a necessary check up for your eyes. Your eye sight could have gone worse, or your eyes may be suffering from an allergy or infection without you knowing.

¡áGlasses can be fashionable¡á
Who says people wearing glasses are geeks? If you're going to get glasses, never mind about the bad things people say about glasses. There are countless cool frames to choose from. Since you'll be wearing your glasses a lot, make sure they are comfortable. I suggest you to pick plastic lens for your glasses. Glass tends to be heavy and it can easily break. Plastic is light and allows you to be active and comfortable at the same time.
