How Do Tree Frogs Communicate with Each Other?    [11-06-2010]

Humans use words, body language, and facial expressions to communicate with each other. Then, do you know how frogs communicate with each other? American scientists found that tree frogs send messages to each other by shaking the branches of the plants they live on!

The red-eyed tree frogs live in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Dr. Michael Caldwell at Boston University led the research on the tree frogs. His team found that the frogs shake branches to send messages to other frogs.

¡°The tree frogs can send warnings about threats from predators to each other by rapidly shaking the branches of trees,¡± said Dr. Caldwell. ¡°Nearby frogs recognize the vibrations through their legs and often send back vibrations of their own. We believe the frogs may also use vibrations to send other messages to each other.¡±

The researchers found in their tests that the tree frogs could detect vibrations up to two meters away! In fact, the vibrations can travel much further.

Until now, many scientists thought that only insects could communicate with each other by sending vibrations through plants. These new findings will help scientists better understand animal behavior.
