Everyone
makes mistakes sometimes. Even the U.S. Secretary of State makes
mistakes too! Last week, Hillary Clinton mistakenly sent birthday greetings to the
Queen of England a week early. She sent the message on behalf of President Barack
Obama and the American people.
Mrs. Clinton wished the Queen well on her 84th birthday and hailed the special relationship between Britain
and the U.S. ¡°The United States has always been grateful for your friendship.
I wish Queen Elizabeth II a very happy birthday and peace and prosperity for the people
of the United Kingdom in the year to come,¡± she said in her message.
Her message was really great. The only problem was that she sent it
too early on June 5.
The Queen¡¯s actual birthday is on April 21. But she celebrates her official birthday
on a Saturday in June. The day is decided by the government. This
year, it was celebrated on June 12. The tradition of celebrating
two birthdays began under King Edward VII, who was born in November
but wanted his birthday parade to take place in the summer.
The American government admitted its mistake. ¡°We
sent the greetings a week early,¡± said Philip Crowley, spokesman for
the U.S. Department of State¹Ì±¹ ±¹¹«ºÎ. ¡°But it is better to give a greeting
a week early than a week late,¡± he added jokingly. Let¡¯s hope the
Queen is OK with Mrs. Clinton¡¯s harmless mistake! |
