The World¡¯s Smallest Snowman    [18-12-2009]
Untitled Document
In winter, a lot of snow falls in Korea. On a snowy day, many children go out and make snowmen. They often compete with each other to make the biggest snowman. But can you believe that some scientists compete with each other to make the world¡¯s smallest snowman? Recently, scientists in England won the competition.
Scientists at the National Physical Laboratory in London succeeded in making the smallest snowman in the world. So, how small is it? Don¡¯t be surprised. It is only 0.01mm, which is 1/5 the width of a human hair! The tiny snowman was not created using balls of snow. Instead, it was made using two tiny beads.
The pieces were welded together with platinum. The scientists used an ion beam to carve the snowman¡¯s eyes, nose, and smile. The world¡¯s smallest snowman is the result of the manipulation of nanotech particles. Isn¡¯t it cute? But you have to use a microscope to see him!
