In
2009, many babies were born all over the world. Many babies were born
in England, too. So, what was the most popular baby name in England?
A portal childcare information website,
bounty.com¡¯s recent survey about baby names was
released on December 29, 2009.
According to the survey which
picked last year¡¯s 100 most
popular names for boys and girls, the most popular baby name for boys
was ¡°Jack.¡± As a matter of fact, Jack
has been maintaining its lead as the
most popular name for 15 years in a row! I guess there must be so many
boys named Jack in England. If you call ¡°Jack!¡± on the streets in
London, so many boys will turn their heads!
So, what are the other popular names for British boys? Oliver, Charlie,
Harry, Thomas, Joshua, William, James, Oscar, and Daniel were among
the most popular names for boys. However, some boy names such as Ryan,
Alex, Matthew, and Kieran saw a huge popularity drop last year.
As for girls, the most popular
name in England turned out to be ¡°Olivia.¡± Ruby, Sophie, Chloe, Emily,
Grace, Jessica, Lily, Mia, and Lucy were also among the most popular
names for girls in 2009. Last year¡¯s least popular girl names
include Rebecca, Eve, Abbie,
Hannah, and Keira.
According to Faye Mingo, spokeswoman for bounty.com,
parents tend to be influenced by popular culture. TV stars
and other famous people also affect parents when naming
their babies. ¡®¡¯Many parents try to name their babies after famous
people. For example, Madonna¡¯s daughter¡¯s
name Lola is gaining huge popularity these days. A growing number
of babies are named after celebrities.¡±
She added that the economic slump is also affecting
the mood of the nation and many
parents tend to choose common names for their babies. ¡°It may be because
parents don¡¯t have the time to be more creative about their children¡¯s
names,¡± she explained.
Let¡¯s hope the world economy revives in 2010 and this
year¡¯s babies will get more creative and interesting names! |
