Can Fish Talk to Each Other?    [16-07-2010]

We talk with other people by using words, body language, and facial expressions. Some animals also communicate with each other by making sounds and body gestures. But can fish talk to each other as well?

According to scientists in New Zealand, the answer is YES! Scientists at Auckland University recently discovered that some fish communicate with each other by making sounds! They grunt, growl, and chirp to communicate.

¡°I¡¯m 99 percent sure that fish can make sounds. Although all fish can hear, not all can make sounds. For example, goldfish have excellent hearing, but they don¡¯t make any sounds,¡± said Shahriman Ghazali, a researcher at Auckland University. ¡°Some fish can make sounds by vibrating their swim bladder.¡±

The researchers placed groups of fish into tanks in a laboratory. Then, they put an underwater microphone and instruments that detect water movement. After monitoring the fish for a few weeks, they discovered that gurnards are the most talkative fish. They kept talking to each other all day long. On the other hand, codfish stayed mostly silent. But they became very talkative when laying eggs.

Now the scientists are trying to find out what the sounds really mean. Wouldn¡¯t it be great if we could understand what fish say?
