How
many hours of TV do you watch a day? During vacation, many children watch
TV for longer than usual. You can get a lot of useful information through
good TV programs. But spending a long time in front of TV is bad for
you. It's not good for your eyes and it can even shorten your life!
According to a new study, sitting in front of
the television for many hours everyday could shorten your life. Researchers
in Australia studied the lifestyle habits of 8,800 adults for
7 years from 1999 to 2006. They found that each hour spent in front
of TV daily increased the risk of heart disease.
¡°Compared with people who
watched less than 2 hours of television
daily, those who watched more than 4 hours a day had a 46 percent
higher risk of experiencing serious health problems such
as a heart attack, high blood pressure, and
even cancer,¡± the researchers said.
Dr. David
Dunstan, who led the study said that an unhealthy lifestyle such as sitting
at a desk or in front of a computer and TV may pose a health risk.
¡°The human body was designed to move, not sit for long periods of time,¡±
he said. ¡°Due to advanced technologies, today
people don't move their muscles as much as they used to in the past. Even if you are very healthy
now, sitting for long periods of time still has a bad influence on
your body,¡± he added.
Dr. Dunstan recommends exercising regularly to stay healthy. ¡°In addition to doing regular
exercise, avoid sitting for
too long. Too much sitting is bad for health.¡±
Now you know what you have to do to live a long
and healthy life. That¡¯s right. Don¡¯t watch television for more than
2 hours a day. Also, keep in mind to move more,
more often! |
