William Shakespeare is the most famous writer in history. He wrote so many plays including Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, King Lear, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. He was born in the 16th Century in England. But no one knows his exact birth date. Although we are not sure if this was his actual birthday, people in England celebrate his birthday on April 23. This week, let's meet the great playwright!

William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 in a small country town in England. However, his exact birth date was never recorded. He was the eldest son of Mary Arden and John Shakespeare. Very little is known about his early life.
At the age of 18, Shakespeare married a local girl, Ann Hathwey. Ann was eight years older than him. In 1582, their first daughter Susanna was born. Two years later, they had twins named Hamnet and Judith. There is no record of Shakespeare's activities from the time of the birth of his twins until 1592.

Shakespeare was a well-known playwright in London by the end of 1592. But no one is sure of the exact date in which his first play was written and performed. Shakespeare wrote and acted in many plays from his early days in London up until about 1614. He wrote many different types of plays including historical plays, comedies, tragedies, as well as many poems and sonnets.

Many people in the world think Shakespeare is the greatest dramatist of all time. He used 29,066 different words in his plays. That's a lot of words! Today, the average English-speaking person uses only 2,000 words in everyday conversation. Some of his plays such as Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet are among the most famous literary works of the world.

Shakespeare did not print any of his plays during his lifetime. He passed away on April 23, 1616. The first collection of his plays was printed seven years after his death. The plays written by Shakespeare have been the most read and performed plays during the last 400 years!
