Gorillas
share many similarities with
humans. They can walk like us, use tools like us, and even play
like us! British scientists recently found that gorillas
play tag and sometimes cheat each other like humans,
too.
Dr. Marina Davila Ross of the University of Portsmouth in the UK studied
21 gorillas in five zoos in Europe. She filmed them over three years
and then examined the videos. She
found in her research that gorillas have
very similar behavior to humans.
When playing, they hit each other and then run in the same manner as a children¡¯s game
of tag. Also, they often cheat
each other by using unfair tactics, just like humans!
¡°The findings
on a gorilla play show important similarities with the children¡¯s
game of tag,¡± Dr. Ross said. ¡°The gorillas hit their friends and then
run away. Then, they switch their roles. But of course there
are no rules in their games.¡±
According to Dr. Ross, playing
is an important tool for young children. Playing with others helps
them develop their social and emotional skills. The same
goes for gorillas. While playing with their friends, gorillas learn
how to deal with different situations. How interesting!
