Due to human activities, many animals are losing their homes and some are seriously endangered. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)¼¼°èÀÚ¿¬º¸È£±â±Ý, the world¡¯s largest freshwater fish is under threat of extinction. If we don¡¯t protect them, we won¡¯t be able to see them in the near future!

Soon, 11 hydro-power dams will be constructed in Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia along the Mekong River to supply electricity to Southeast Asia. The WWF warned that the new dams would lead to the extinction of the world¡¯s largest freshwater fish species such as the catfish and the freshwater stingray.

The catfish can grow up to 350 kilograms and the freshwater stingray can weigh up to 600 kilograms. These huge fish will not be able to swim across a large barrier like a dam to reach its spawning grounds upstream.

The Mekong is the longest river in Southeast Asia. It flows through Tibet, Southern China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The river is home to some of the world¡¯s largest freshwater fish and many other unique fish. Let¡¯s hope the Southeast Asian countries will stop building the dams to protect these giant fish!
