Blood
donation is very important. It can save many precious lives. But you
have to be healthy to donate your blood. For example, very young children
or people with diseases cannot donate their blood. Even if you are
totally healthy, donating your blood is not an easy thing to do. Most
people fear the needles! But there is a very brave man in Australia
who is called the ¡°man with the golden arm.¡± His name is James Harrison
and he is 74 years old. To our surprise, the grandpa has saved the
lives of more than two million babies by donating his blood! In fact,
he donated his blood about 1,000 times so far! He carries a rare antibody,
which can cure anemia. In order to help babies who need the antibody,
Mr. Harrison has given his blood every week for 56 years! ¡°I¡¯ve never
thought about stopping blood donation. I¡¯m not scared. I¡¯m glad to
help many babies,¡± he said. Wow! Let¡¯s hope his blood continues to
save more babies in the future! |
