Have
you seen police dogs before? The most
common police dogs are German Shepherds. They make
great police dogs because they are very brave and strong. They are
also very smart. By using their great sense of smell, they can
find dangerous explosives and drugs. But
have you ever seen a small police dog? If you go to Japan, you will
be able to see a very cute police
dog!
On November 20, a brown and white haired Chihuahua named Momo surprised
the Japanese people by becoming a police dog after passing some difficult
exams. The seven-year-old dog with long hair successfully passed search
and rescue tests by finding a person in five minutes after sniffing his cap.
¡°Any breed of dog can become a
police dog in the search and rescue division,¡±
said a police spokesman from the western Japanese prefecture of Nara. ¡°However,
it¡¯s quite unusual for a Chihuahua to become a police dog,¡± he added.
Momo will work as a search dog during disasters such as earthquakes. Since earthquakes
happen frequently in Japan, the
Japanese police hope the small Chihuahua will help find people quickly
by squeezing her body into narrow places.
¡°German Shepherds are wonderful rescue dogs, but they cannot
go into narrow places. However, tiny Momo is perfect for the job.
She will be able to squeeze her body into places too narrow for bigger
rescue dogs,¡± said the police spokesman. Good luck with your new job,
Momo! |
