magazine picks a “person of the year”
every year from among the most powerful and influential people who have
helped change the world. This year, 26-year-old Mark Zuckerberg was
chosen as the person of the year, beating Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. So,
who is Mark Zuckerberg and why did this young man win the honorable title?
Mark Zuckerberg is a U.S. computer scientist and software developer. He is best known
for creating the social networking site Facebook. He is the CEO and
president of the company. Born in 1984, he became one of the world’s
youngest billionaires thanks to the website’s huge success.
Facebook was co-founded as a private company in 2004 by
Mark and his classmates Dustin Moskovitz,
Eduardo Saverin, and Chris Hughes. At the time they were students
at Harvard University. Mark was studying psychology and computer science.
His nickname at Harvard was the
“programming prodigy”.
 Mark,
who was excellent at math, astronomy, and physics, was interested in
computer programming as a child. He began using computers and writing
software when he was a middle school student. He even learned computer
programming privately from a software
developer. He also took a graduate course in the subject at Mercy College
near his home, while he was still in high school. He enjoyed developing
computer programs, especially communication
tools and games.
Mark created the social networking
site Facebook in his second year at Harvard with his friends. He wanted
to create a virtual space for the students
to connect with each other and
share information. The web
service was only available to Harvard students at first, but as Facebook’s
popularity grew, the site
expanded to surrounding universities.
 Today, Facebook
is the most popular social networking website in the world, used by
nearly 600 million people all over the planet. Korea also has over
2 million Facebook users. The site has changed people’s lifestyles and helped them
easily connect with each
other. In recognition of its innovative ways of connecting
people, its founder Mark Zuckerberg was named Time magazine’s person
of the year. “I'm trying to make the world a more open place by helping
people connect and share,” said Mark. “It is a real honor that people
recognize how our little
team is building something that hundreds of millions of people
want to use to make the world more open and connected. I'm happy to
be a part of that.” |
