I¡¯m Just a Normal Boy!    [21-01-2011]

The color pink is loved by girls all over the world. Many girls go crazy for the color. Yet most boys don¡¯t really like the lovely color. However, in the U.S. there is a boy who loves pink very much. In fact, he even loves wearing pink dresses! You may think he is strange, but he is not. He is just a normal, healthy kid with different tastes.

The boy¡¯s name is Dyson and he is 5 years old. He lives in Seattle with his parents. Just like other boys, he is very active and loves playing outside with his friends.
He often plays soccer with his older brother, too. He also loves to wrestle with him.

Unlike most boys, however, the little boy likes to wear colorful dresses and jewelry. He often wears bright pink or red dresses and sparkly pink socks. ¡°I like to dress up in different kinds of clothes and jewelry because it is fun!¡± said Dyson.

At first, Dyson¡¯s mom, Cheryl Dyson Kilodavis, tried to change his girly tastes. However, she realized one day that there is nothing wrong with having unique tastes. So she let her little boy express himself in his own ways. Last year, she even wrote a book called My Princess Boy to tell people to accept other¡¯s differences.

The non-fiction picture book tells the tale of a 4-year-old boy who happily expresses himself by enjoying traditional girly things such as jewelry, sparkles and anything pink. ¡°Some people criticize or make fun of Dyson. But that¡¯s wrong,¡± she said. ¡°Everyone is different and we should learn how to accept their differences.¡±

Many parents and teachers say that the book is helpful for teaching their children to better understand and respect other people.
¡°The message of the book is about acceptance and love, not judgment and limitations on a child¡¯s spirit. It is an excellent way to discuss differences with my children,¡± said a mother who read the book.

What do you think about Dyson? Do you think it¡¯s OK for boys to wear colorful dresses and enjoy girly stuff? Well, maybe Dyson just wants to say to the world that accepting the differences is very important.
