Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968) was an American
clergyman, peace activist, and leader in the African-American civil rights movement.
He is also well-known for his famous 'I Have a Dream' speech, which he delivered in 1963 in Washington
DC.
He gave hope to African-Americans through this speech. He passed away
a long time ago, but he is
still remembered by millions of people all over
the world. In fact, he is considered to be the most influential African-American
of all time.
In a recent
survey of history¡¯s most
influential African-Americans, Martin Luther King Jr. was chosen as
the most influential African-American of all time. An African-American
news video community, TheGrio.com, asked
people to choose the 25 most influential African-American leaders
of all time out of a list of 170 and Dr. King topped the list. The
first African-American president, Barack Obama, came in second place.
Malcolm X and Rosa Parks were also included on the list.
Most black people lived horrible lives a long time
ago because they were slaves. Dr. King thought
that discriminating against people because of their skin color was very wrong.
He fought for black people¡¯s human rights and racial equality. Thanks to his efforts and devotion, African-Americans
are treated equally today, enjoying the
same opportunities as white people.
In recognition of his hard
work to end racial discrimination through
non-violent means, Dr. King became the
youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in
1964. By the time of his death in 1968, he had worked hard to achieve many great things,
including ending poverty and stopping the
Vietnam War.
Sadly, Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 at the age of 39 in Memphis,
Tennessee. In 1986, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as
a U.S. federal holiday. Since then,
the day is observed on the third Monday of January every year. |
