Do you know who Lee Soo-hyun is? He was a brave young man who sacrificed his own life to save a Japanese man in 2001 at Shin-Okubo Station in Tokyo. He passed away 10 years ago, but we still remember him. In memory of his sacrifice, his story was even made into the film We Will Not Forget You³Ê¸¦ ÀØÁö ¾ÊÀ» °Å¾ß in 2008. On January 28, a special charity concert was held in Tokyo to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death.

Born in 1974 in Ulsan, Mr. Lee was an ordinary young man who enjoyed sports and listening to music. In 1993, he entered Korea University to study international trade. While studying at the university, he started learning Japanese. In order to better understand Japanese for his studies, he went to Tokyo in 2000.

On January 26, 2001, on his way home, Mr. Lee saw a drunken Japanese man fall onto a subway track at Shin-Okubo Station in Tokyo. He didn¡¯t hesitate to jump down onto the railway tracks to save the man. Sadly, however, both of them died. Mr. Lee was only 26 years old.

The story of the brave young man moved the hearts of many people in Japan. Every year, many Japanese people visit a cemetery in Busan where the young man is resting in peace. Even though 10 years have passed since he sacrificed himself, both Koreans and Japanese people still remember him.

On January 26, Korea and Japan marked the 10th anniversary of the death of Mr. Lee. His family members and friends attended a memorial event held in Busan. A Japanese foundation also organized a 10th anniversary ceremony for him in Tokyo to remember his sacrifice. The foundation established a scholarship one year after his death to support Asian students studying in Japan.

The Japanese Prime Minister, Naoto Kan, sent a message saying, ¡°The Japanese people have never forgotten Lee¡¯s courage for 10 years.¡± President Lee Myung-bak also said the two countries should deepen their bond and friendship to respect Mr. Lee¡¯s wish to become a link between them.

We will never forget you, Mr. Lee! Rest in peace!
