Today,
most people lead very busy
lives. Even young children are busy with many things. You may complain about your busy
life sometimes. But an American scientist proved that being busy is
actually good for you. That¡¯s
right; the secret to happiness is keeping busy!
According to Professor Christopher Hsee,
a behavioral scientist at Chicago
University, keeping busy makes people happy. In his recent study,
he found that keeping busy makes people happy. This is because keeping
the mind occupied with something - no matter how meaningless - drives out
negative feelings.
He
asked 98 students to complete two surveys. After they had completed
the first, they had to wait 15 minutes to receive the next one. The
students were given a choice of either handing in the first survey
nearby or at a more distant location they had to walk
to. Whichever option they chose, they received
a chocolate bar.
Among the students, 68 percent chose the nearby location. Professor
Hsee found that the other 32 percent who decided to walk to the distant
location felt happier than those who chose the lazy option.
¡°If you want to feel happy, keep yourself busy,¡± he advised. ¡°Don¡¯t just sit
still. Instead, stand up and do
something. Anything. Even if there is no point to what you are doing,
you will feel better for it!¡±
According
to the professor, thinking about something deeply or planning for
the future is also helpful. ¡°You don¡¯t need to run around to keep
yourself busy - you just need to be engaged in something,
either physically or mentally to cast away negative emotions and feel happier.¡±
There is also a saying that goes: ¡°The busy
bee has no time for sorrow.¡± When you feel down or sad, try to
do something and focus on that. While concentrating on some tasks, you will be able to forget about your
bad feelings and feel happier! |
