Dogs
have a great sense of smell. In fact,
a dog¡¯s sense of smell can be 100 times better than ours! That is
why some dogs are used to find drugs or explosives in airports. Surprisingly, a Labrador
living in England can even smell her owner¡¯s blood sugar levels!
The amazing dog¡¯s name is Shirley. She was trained for over a year
to help her owner Rebecca Farrar, who is suffering from diabetes. The seven-year-old
girl¡¯s condition is very serious. If her blood sugar
levels change, she can fall into a coma.
However, Rebecca is safe because Shirley is always with her. The dog
watches her young owner all the time. When the dog notices a change in Rebecca¡¯s
blood sugar levels, she continuously licks the young girl as a
warning.
Rebecca has to rely on her dog¡¯s excellent
sense of smell because she cannot tell when her blood sugar levels
are becoming too high or low.
If Rebecca
doesn¡¯t recognize Shirley¡¯s sign,
the amazing dog goes and fetches medicine for her owner.
If Shirley senses Rebecca¡¯s blood sugar levels going low during the
night, she tries her hardest to wake Rebecca up by licking her legs
and feet. If Shirley can¡¯t wake her up, she goes into Rebecca¡¯s mom¡¯s
bedroom and wakes her up. Isn¡¯t she amazing? |
