What would you do if you see a person who needs your help? I¡¯m sure you will help him or her right away. For example, many people want to give a helping hand to the people in Japan, who are having a hard time after losing their homes and family members due to the recent earthquake and tsunami. To our surprise, elephants like to help others, too!

According to the researchers at Cambridge University in Britain, elephants can learn to lend each other a helping hand. The scientists said that the giant animals quickly learned to cooperate with each other to solve problems in a series of tests. The tests were conducted in Thailand recently.

¡°Elephants are highly social animals and they learn how to help each other quickly,¡± explained the lead researcher Joshua M. Plotnik. ¡°They are really, really smart. I was surprised how quickly they learned. They are quick learners.¡±

The researchers said that elephants help others who are in trouble. ¡°They seem emotionally attached to each other in some ways. This is why they can learn how to cooperate with each other easily,¡± said Mr. Plotnik.

The scientists hope that understanding how elephants think could help find ways to protect them in the wild. Today, the number of elephants is decreasing sharply due to illegal hunting.
