The
mood in Japan is very blue these days. The whole country
is still in chaos due to the powerful earthquake and tsunami that hit the country
in March. In order to cheer the people
up, a zoo in Tokyo opened a pair of lovely pandas to
the public last Friday.
When the destructive natural disasters happened
last month, more than 27,000 people died and about 350,000 lost their
homes. Many people are still staying at temporary accommodations.
They must feel very sad and hopeless.
On April 1, Ueno Zoo in Tokyo prepared a fun event for the victims of the earthquake
and tsunami. The zoo invited about 300 people who lost their homes
by the tsunami. Then, it unveiled a pair of pandas
to them. The pandas made their first public appearance to provide a little light relief for the Japanese people.
The pandas
came to Japan from China in February this year after the last panda
at Ueno Zoo, Ling Ling, died in 2008. Their arrival was broadcast live
on national television.
The male panda is called Ri Ri
and the female is called Shin Shin.
Both of them are 5 years old. The pandas¡¯ debut was postponed for about two weeks
due to the disaster on March 11.
¡°The mood in Japan is so gloomy now. We hope the pandas
will help lighten the mood in Japan,¡±
said a zoo official. Let¡¯s hope more
people will come see the pandas so they can cheer people up! |
