Sheep are usually white in
color. But have you ever seen an orange sheep? It is hard be believe,
but you can see orange sheep if you visit a farm in Devon, England! A
farmer named John Heard really has bright orange-colored sheep on his
farm. But how come his sheep are orange in color?
Mr. Heard has 250 blackface sheep and all of
them have orange wool. The truth is; he painted his sheep with orange
paint! But why did he do that? Of course he didn¡¯t do it for fun or to make them look
more beautiful.
He turned his sheep orange to
keep thieves away from them! Mr. Heard, who runs his livestock farm in Devon,
had lost 200 sheep over the past few years. He did everything he could
to prevent sheep theft. But
nothing worked and he ended up losing
many of his animals.
Recently,
he came up with a great idea to protect his sheep from thieves. Yes, that¡¯s right;
he painted them orange! Don¡¯t worry; the paint is harmless to the sheep and
it eventually wears off with
no side effects for the animals.
So, is the orange dye working? According to
the farmer, it is working wonders. ¡°Sheep stealing has become a big
problem in England. So far, I have lost so many of my sheep,¡± Mr.
Heard said. ¡°My son suggested the orange dye
and although it produces some strange-looking sheep, it
has done the trick and I haven¡¯t lost one this year.¡±
The orange dye makes his sheep so highly visible. Thieves are obviously nervous about stealing
such easily distinguished animals! |
