Today most buildings have elevators. They surely make our lives faster and more convenient. But did you know that elevator buttons are full of germs? According to American researchers, elevator buttons are dirtier than toilet seats!

Recently, researchers at the University of Arizona in the U.S. looked into the elevator buttons in hotels, restaurants, banks, offices, and airports. They have found that a regular elevator button harbors nearly 40 times as many germs as a public toilet seat!

¡°We found 313 colony forming units of bacteria on every square centimeter of elevator button,¡± said Dr. Nicholas Moon, who carried out the research. ¡°The equivalent surface area of toilet seat had only 8 units.¡±

The researchers warned that the harmful bacteria on the elevator buttons could cause various health problems. ¡°In a busy building, an elevator button is touched by thousands of people every day and you may have come into contact with all kinds of bacteria every hour. Even if the buttons are cleaned regularly, the potential for the buildup of bacteria is high,¡± Dr. Moon added.

Now you know what to do after touching elevator buttons. That¡¯s right. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap!
