The sea otter is a lovely marine mammal. It is the largest member of the weasel family. Sea otters have thick fur to help keep them warm. In fact, they have the thickest fur in the animal kingdom. Other marine mammals have a layer of fat to help keep them warm. But unlike them, sea otters don't have it.

The sea otter is one of the smallest marine mammals. Male sea otters weigh 22 to 45 kilograms. And they are 1.2 to 1.5 meters long. Females are smaller, weighing 14 to 33 kilograms. They are 1 to 1.4 meters long. Males can live up to 10~15 years; females can live up to 15~20 years.

Sea otters live in shallow coastal waters. They spend much of their lives in the water. They eat about 25 percent of their weight in food each day. They usually eat mussels, clams, crabs, and about 40 other marine animals.

Sea otters used to live all over the world. But people killed so many of them for their fur. Today, only about 1,000~2,000 sea otters are living in the wild. They can be found in California, Washington, Alaska, Canada, Russia, and Japan.
