to know why? Then, keep reading!
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. He was
the son of Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Thomas Lincoln was a carpenter and farmer. When Abraham was
8 years old, his family moved to Indiana and he grew up there. When
he was only 10, his mother died.
As he grew up, Abraham loved reading books. He also loved learning.
So he was constantly borrowing books from his
neighbors. Young Abraham
was loved by his neighbors. He was very kind and honest. So his neighbors
called him "Honest Abe."
In 1830, he moved to Illinois. While there, he worked at several jobs. Also, he studied
law on his own in his spare time. He became a lawyer in 1836. In 1839,
Lincoln met a woman named Mary Todd. Three years later, they were
married. They had four children.
From
1834 to 1840, Abraham ran for the Illinois legislature and won all four
times. In 1860, Lincoln ran for President and became the 16th United
States President.
During his lifetime, slavery was accepted and
practiced by many people. But Lincoln believed that slavery was wrong.
So he tried to give freedom to all the slaves in the country. Unfortunately,
however, some people didn't agree with Lincoln.
On April 14, 1865, Lincoln attended a play at Ford's
Theatre. There, he was shot and killed by a man named John Wilkes
Booth. His death was the result of the big differences
in the way people thought during that time.
Abraham Lincoln was a very important man in history. Because of his
actions and determination, slaves in
America regained freedom. Thanks to Lincoln, everyone
is treated equally in America today. |
