eat it every day here in Korea. And many people all around the world
also eat it. We can't live without it. It gives us energy. It is white in color.
It is a kind of grain. And it's delicious! What do you think

Rice is very important for us. We eat
it at least once a day. Many Koreans eat it
three times a day. When we
are hungry, we sometimes eat bread or noodles instead of rice. But rice
is still our main food. Rice is also a
main food for many people in other countries. Millions of people in Asia,
Africa and South America eat it every day of their lives. Some people
eat almost nothing but rice. Rice is
eaten by nearly one-half of the entire world population!
Where Does Rice Come From?
Rice has a long history. But no one really knows where it came from.
Most believe the roots of rice come from 3000
B.C. India. Back then, people in India
discovered the plant growing in the wild, and they began
to cook it to eat. Then, Indian
travelers took it to other
parts of the world.
How
Many Kinds of Rice Are There?
Don't be surprised. There are more
than 7,000 kinds of rice in the world! Yes, farmers grow rice in many
countries. Today rice is grown and harvested on every continent except Antarctica³²±Ø´ë·ú. Most
rice grows in wet soil, but some rice can grow
in dry soil. Farmers in many
countries still do all of the work of growing rice by hand. But in some countries,
people use machines on their rice farms. More than 550 million tons
of rice is produced every year around the globe. Asian farmers
still account for 92 percent of
the world's total rice production. The majority of all rice
produced comes from India, China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Burma,
and Bangladesh.
Rice Is Good For You!
Rice is a very healthy food for a number of reasons. With high nutrients, rice is a good
source of fiber. Also, it is low in fat and has no cholesterol. It also contains some protein and plenty of vitamin B. And it is easy
to digest. Among other nutrients, rice
is rich in carbohydrates, the main source
of energy. So, eat lots of rice and get healthier! |
