Becoming
a better friend for your dog begins with understanding their nature.
Dogs neither act like wolves nor think the way that humans do. In
order to keep your furry companion mentally and physically healthy,
it is important to realize a few things. Let¡¯s take a look at the
new science behind the behavior of dogs.
Expectations
VS. Reality
We lead very busy lives. City animals are expected to behave and match
themselves to our moods. For example, they should be energetic when
we have the time and self-reliant when we don¡¯t. The days are long
and dogs have a poor grasp of time. For them, a few hours can feel
like a few days and they begin to wonder, ¡®Where has my owner gone?¡¯,
and may even think, ¡®Have I been abandoned?¡± Showing your dog a routine
and repetitive behavior when leaving the house can assure your pet
that you are returning. Also, try not to give your pet too much attention
just before you go. It will only make your dog more confused.
How to Deal with Bad Behavior
Dogs like to get your attention. Physical and verbal punishment can
still make your dog act badly as it is still getting your attention.
The next time your dog does something bad, try crossing your arms
and looking away; completely ignoring your animal sends a very strong
message. Also, try to strengthen positive behaviors by giving praise
and attention on your pet when it listens to your command or does
something good.
The Power of Smell
Dogs are slightly color-blind, but they can hear high-pitched sounds
better than we can. However, their true superpower is in their nose.
Dogs sniff and smell everything. It is how they see and recognize
the world and people around them. Remember this when you are walking
your dog outside, and give it time to sniff around. Also, when meeting
a new dog for the first time, put out your hand gently in a loosely
closed fist - to protect your fingers just in case - and let it smell
you. It is their way of getting to know you. |
