Many countries all around the world welcomed the decision. The world leaders praised Mr. Ban for his hard work to make the world a better place.

Born on June 13, 1944 in a small farming village in Chungcheongbuk-do, Mr. Ban was a normal boy who loved studying English. In 1962, when he was a high school student, he became the star student after winning an essay contest sponsored by the Red Cross.
As a prize, he earned a life-changing trip to the U.S. where he lived in San Francisco with a host family for several months. As part of the trip, he also met U.S. President John F. Kennedy. When a journalist at the meeting asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up, he said, ¡°I want to become a diplomat.¡± A few years later, his dream came true!

Mr. Ban entered diplomatic service after graduating from Seoul National University in 1970. He also earned a Master of Public Administration at Harvard University in 1985. He served his first post in New Delhi, India. Later in 2009, Mr. Ban was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws by the University of Malta. He further received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Washington in the same year.

Before serving as the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban was the Foreign Minister of Korea from January, 2004 to November, 2006. On October 13, 2006, he was elected to be the 8th Secretary General by the United Nations General Assembly. On January 1, 2007, he succeeded Kofi Annan successfully.
His first term will be over on December 31 of this year.
In recognition of his modesty and sincerity, the 67-year-old UN leader was unanimously backed by the United Nations General Assembly as Secretary General to serve another 5 years. Mr. Ban has won praise for his commitment to climate change, nuclear disarmament, and women¡¯s issues.
Now Mr. Ban is ready to work harder to make the world a better place for everyone. He will especially focus on climate change. ¡°The battle against global warming is the most important priority for mankind,¡± he said. ¡°Climate change - a topic the United Nations struggled with during my first 5years - is my top challenge.¡±

Good luck with your second term at the UN, Mr. Ban! We are very proud of you!
