I¡¯m
sure most of you have seen at least one beauty contest before. These
competitions usually select the most beautiful
and talented lady as a queen.
However, an old American lady recently proved that a beautiful mind is more important than
a pretty face. Last week, she won a beauty contest thanks to her kindness and warmth! This week, let¡¯s
meet the amazing granny!
Can you imagine a beauty queen with
gray hair? To our surprise, a 100-year-old blind granny won a beauty
contest at a nursing home in Alabama.
Her name is Felma Schrimshire. She beat nine other finalists and was crowned
¡®Ms. Alabama Nursing Home.¡¯
¡°It was wonderful!¡± said Mrs. Schrimshire after winning the competition.
¡°Everybody has just been so nice, sweet, and caring. It¡¯s just great.
I don¡¯t know any other way to express it,¡± she said with a big smile.
So,
what was her secret to winning the contest?
According to the workers of the Alabama Nursing
Home, it was her friendliness and warmth that
won her the title. ¡°She is a charming, warm-hearted person. She
mesmerized the audience with her kindness
and warmth,¡± said John Matson who works at the nursing home. ¡°She
had a very lively presence on stage, and I
think that won over the judges and the crowd as well," he said.
Surprisingly, she served in the surgeon¡¯s office during the
Second World War. Not many
women were in the army back then. ¡°My husband¡¯s
sight was too poor to join the Army at the time.
I was going into the Army myself,¡± she said.
After her
husband died, she moved to Alabama. Now she lives with her sister
and spends her time studying the Bible.
¡°I don¡¯t think I¡¯m pretty or beautiful. But I believe that I¡¯m a kind
person. I guess this is why I won the
beauty contest,¡± she said. ¡°I think that having a kind heart is more
important than having a pretty face.¡±
Congratulations, Mrs. Schrimshire!
And thank you for teaching us the real meaning of beauty! |
