We
are living in the 21st century, where high tech machinery and tools are all around us.
By using computers and smartphones, we can access the Internet anytime and anywhere to get the information
we want very quickly. As a matter of fact, many
schools are using computers in the classroom to help students
learn faster. However, it turns
out that the old-fashioned methods work better when it comes to learning!
These days, many students use computers or tablet PCs when taking
notes. They are surely very convenient tools and you
can write faster with them. However, you should write with your hands
if you want to imprint knowledge on to your
brain.
Researchers at the University
of Stavanger in Norway found that students who write by hand learn
better than those who type. According to the new
study, the process of putting pen to
paper and reading from a book seems to imprint knowledge on the brain
in a better way than using a keyboard and computer screen.
The researchers studied two groups of adults for more than six weeks
during the project. In an experiment, the two groups
learned to write in an unknown alphabet, consisting
of about 20 letters. One group was asked
to write by hand, while the other used a keyboard. Six weeks later,
the participants were tested
to see if they remembered these letters. Those who had learned the
letters by writing them out did very well in all the tests.
¡°Reading
and writing involves a number of senses and when writing by
hand your brain receives feedback from your muscles and finger tips,¡± explained Professor Anne Mangen, who
led the study. ¡°This kind of feedback is stronger than that which
we receive when touching and typing on a keyboard,¡± she explained.
According to the professor,
writing by hand takes more mental effort and time. This can
help imprint memories and strengthens the learning
mechanism.
Now you know what to do to learn better; use your hands instead of a computer keyboard! |
