The ladybug is a colorful little bug (1mm to 10mm long). It is also called the "Ladybird" in England. Ladybugs are commonly yellow, orange or red with small black spots on their wing covers. The number of spots on a ladybug determines what kind of ladybug it is. The spots on a ladybug fade as it gets older!

Ladybugs are found worldwide. Surprisingly, there are over 5,000 different kinds of ladybugs in the world! More than 450 kinds of them are native to North America. There are over 100 kinds of ladybugs in Europe. The most common ladybugs are the two-spot ladybug and the seven-spot ladybug.
Ladybugs are very colorful. They use their coloration to warn birds that they will not taste so good if they are eaten. If a bird touches a ladybug, a yellow fluid will come out from its body. This fluid has a bitter taste. It smells very bad, too!

Many people in the world believe that ladybugs will bring them good luck. In Sweden, it is said that if a ladybug lands in a young woman's hand, she will soon get married! In England, if a farmer finds a ladybug, he will have a good harvest. Some say that if you find a ladybug in your house in winter, it brings you good luck!
