Can
dogs do math? Apparently, a black Labrador Retriever named
¡°Beau¡± in Montana, U.S., can! His owner, David Madsen, says
that Beau counts, adds, and subtracts. He can also do
some division and has memorized square roots!
Madsen adopted Beau as a puppy 12 years ago. He taught
the dog basic math skills when the dog showed
signs of being very smart.
As a puppy, Beau would invent games. Madsen first
taught his pet using dog biscuits. He spread out a few and rewarded Beau when he barked the right number of
barks corresponding to the number
of biscuits.
Madsen says that he does not do any signs or tricks to help Beau out,
and that the dog is really counting and doing math on his own. A local fire chief also asked the
dog things like, ¡°What¡¯s two and three?¡± and the dog will go, ¡°Bark,
bark ¡¦.bark, bark, bark.¡±
The local station picked up the story
and Beau almost got to go on TV and perform. Although he didn¡¯t make the cut, the news station
in Montana showed clips of Beau¡¯s performance. He has become
famous around the shops, restaurants and cabins in the Flathead Lake
resort in Montana where Madsen spends his summers. Regardless of whether it
is just a trick or the dog is very
intelligent, his owner and
those that know Beau thinks he is just amazing. |
