You can find kangaroos in Australia. There are over 60 different kinds of kangaroos! All of the kangaroos have powerful hind legs. They use their long tails for balancing while hopping. They also use their tails as a fifth leg when moving slowly. Their bodies are covered in thick, woolly hair that can be gray, brown or red in color.
Red and gray kangaroos stand between 152 and 183 centimeters tall. Most weigh between 23 and 54 kilograms. But some can reach 90 kilograms! Usually, female kangaroos are smaller than males.
Kangaroos live in forests, woodland areas and savannas. They mainly eat grasses. And they can survive a few days without water. Most kangaroos are active at night. But some are active in the early morning and late afternoon.

Kangaroo females carry their babies in a pouch on the front of their bellies. Most kangaroos are able to breed all year round. Usually, female kangaroos give birth to one baby at a time. Kangaroo babies weigh as little as 1 gram at birth!
After birth, the baby crawls into its mother's pouch. There, it continues to grow. Red kangaroo babies do not leave the pouch until they are more than 8 months old. Gray kangaroo babies stay inside the pouch until they are almost a year old. On average, kangaroos live for 6 to 8 years in the wild.
