Are You Really My Mom?    [24-06-2011]

Wild animals usually don¡¯t get along well with other species. They often attack each other for food or habitat. However, some animals form unusual friendships between different species. For example, recently, a baboon named Gakii adopted a 3-month-old bush baby. They are living at the Nairobi Animal Orphanage in Kenya.
The little bush baby lost her parents right after birth. However, now she has a new mother - a very special mother. Even though the two look very different, they love each other very much. They spend all day together, drinking milk out of the same bowl and playing together. ¡°This is not normal.

It has not happened here and I guess it has not happened anywhere else,¡± said Edward Kariuki, a warden at the animal home in the Kenyan capital. ¡°The baboon is taking really good care of the bush baby.¡±
Back in 2004, another unlikely case of fostering among orphaned animals happened in Kenya. A giant tortoise adopted a baby hippo who lost his parents in a strong tsunami! Soon, the two were inseparable friends and they became an Internet sensation. In another case, a full-grown lioness adopted a baby oryx, a kind of antelope. Usually, lions eat oryxes for dinner. Surprisingly,
however, the lioness loved her new baby very much! Animal experts can¡¯t really explain why these cases happen. Even though no one knows the reasons, the animals¡¯ special friendships make us happy, too!
