This week, I want to talk about a very special man. He is a man who not only changed his country, but the whole world. His name is Mahatma Gandhi. A long time ago, India was ruled by England. Indians were unfairly treated by the British. Although many people wanted independence, it was very hard since many people were divided by religion. Some were Muslims and some were Hindus. The early 1900s in India was truly a hard time for everyone. Angry people were always using violence to express their wants. This was when Gandhi stood up for his nation.

Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1860. As a child, he was educated in many philosophies and religions. Even as a kid, Gandhi strongly believed in ideas of nonviolence and vegetarianism! He got married at the age of 13. I know this may sound shocking. But back then, it was a tradition for young teens to get married in India.
Gandhi went to London to study law and politics when he was 18. From 1893 to 1914, Gandhi worked in South Africa. He worked on behalf of the Indian community of South Africa. He tried to provide his people with better lives and fought racial discrimination.
When Gandhi returned to India in 1915, he felt very sad. This was because so many Indians were killed by the British troops. And young Indian men were being forced to enter the British army as well. Gandhi decided to lead thousands of protesters.

He also tried hard to help the poor people in India. Since India wasn¡¯t a rich nation, there were many helpless people on the streets. Some were dying of hunger, and some were dying of disease. Gandhi understood their pain. He tried to help them by collecting money and creating jobs. Soon enough, he became a national hero. His thoughts and philosophies changed the hearts of Indians.
Gandhi also kept fighting for independence. And he continued to protest. In 1944, Gandhi demanded the British leave India and give complete independence. His continuous efforts finally brought India independence in 1947.
Sadly, he was shot and killed on January 30, 1948. After his death, his ideas of non-violence and equality of races motivated people like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela who changed the world to a happier and safer place for all.
