Recently, librarians at the Camden Library in Sydney, Australia were very surprised when a book was returned. The book about insectivorous plants was written by Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882). In fact, it was the first edition copy of the great English scientist¡¯s book. The book had been in a private collection for 50 years before being handed to the University of Sydney.

Recently, employees of the university passed it back to the library. A stamp inside the first edition copy showed that the book had been borrowed more than a century ago, on January 30, 1889. This means that the book was returned to the library 122 years late! The librarians at the library have estimated that the late fees for the book to be about $35,000. ¡°It is wonderful to have the book back,¡± said Linda Campbell, the library¡¯s manager. ¡°The university staffs saw the stamp in it and sent it back to us. We were absolutely thrilled! Here¡¯s this fantastic, aged book that can go back into our collection.¡±

Even though the Camden Library won¡¯t charge the late fees, the book would never be lent out again. The precious book will be preserved at the library. People will be able to look at it, but they won¡¯t be able to borrow the book!
