 There
are many kinds of beauty pageants in the world.
The competitions usually pick the most beautiful ladies
and give them crowns. However, there is
a very interesting contest in California that gives crowns for being
ugly! The competition is
held every year since 1988. Can you guess what it is? It’s the
World’s Ugliest Dog Contest! To win the crown in the competition,
the uglier, the better!
This year’s winner is Yoda. The world’s
ugliest dog is a Chinese-crested Chihuahua mix. She is 14 years old.
So, how ugly is she? Very! She was so ugly that she was abandoned
by her owner. When her current owner Terry Schumacher
met the dog with scruffy, wiry hair for the first time, she thought
it was a big rat!
“When I saw her behind my apartment building 14
years ago, I fled because I thought she
was a huge rat. But when I took
a closer look at it, it was actually a dog,” said Terry.
She took the poor little dog home and named her Yoda, after the
small crumpled-faced Jedi master
from the Star Wars films. This was because she looked very similar to Yoda! Even though Yoda was an ugly
dog, Terry loved her so much and took good care of her.
And last Friday, Yoda won the
title as the World’s Ugliest Dog, winning a $1,000 check and a trophy. “She may be the world’s
ugliest dog, but she is the world’s loveliest dog to me!” said
Terry, hugging and kissing Yoda
after she won the competition. Yoda, congratulations for being
so ugly! |
