On
January 8, British physicist Stephen Hawking
turned 70 years old. Hawking
is one of the most well-known scientists today.
The world-famous scientist was
diagnosed with motor neuron disease¿îµ¿ ´º·±Áõ
at the age of 21. No one expected him to live past 30. Hawking was told
that he only had about two years to live. However, he managed to live
to turn 70! Happy birthday, Dr. Hawking!
Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, Britain. He suffered
from a serious health condition called motor
neuron disease at the age of 21. The devastating disease ravaged his body, attacking his nerves, controlling his muscles, then eventually his mood, senses, and thinking. However, nothing
could stop his love for science. He has studied physics and has been trying
to find answers to questions relevant to the existence of humans.
Hawking is best-known for his contributions in the fields of cosmology and quantum gravity, particularly black holes. His quantum
cosmology theorizes on how the universe was created. In
2009, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom¹Ì±¹ ´ëÅë·É ÈÆÀå, the
highest civilian award in the U.S.
Hawking
is not only a scientist but also a celebrity. He has made appearances
as a cameo on The Simpsons as
well as Star Trek. His life story has been adapted into a television
series and a documentary.
Hawking taught students at Cambridge University for 30 years. He has
had a tremendous influence on his students.
He also wrote many books including A Brief History
of Time, which was a bestseller for 237 weeks in Britain. He also
wrote books for children with his daughter Lucy, George¡¯s Secret Key
to the Universe (2007) and George¡¯s Cosmic Treasure Hunt (2009). He
wrote these books to help children learn science in fun ways.
The former Cambridge professor has made many breakthroughs
in science and hopes to make more. His health has worsened over the years,
but he is still standing. This is pretty amazing for someone with
a serious health condition. Please stay healthy and teach us more
about the universe, Dr. Hawking! |
